Memory: Abbey RoadI still remember the first time I heard Abbey Road. I can still smell the fresh cut grass and I see the soft autumn light. I was a fourteen year old boy and went to play football with friends almost every Wednesday afternoon. It was very late afternoon on a warm and beautiful autmumn day. We were still playing when another lad whom I didn’t know turned up in a very excited state of mind. He had a small cassette player with him and told us that he had just bought Abbey Road and transferred it to a cassette tape because he said he wanted to be able to listen to it all the time and everywhere. All of us sat between the goal posts. When he pushed the “start” button the world turned silent except for the magical sound of Abbey Road. Nobody spoke a word and we listened in awe through the whole album. The sun was setting behind the trees at the far end of the pitch and we were locked in some kind of magical communion. The break up of the band was anticipated and I felt a sweet sadness, because I also knew that the time of innocence was over in my personal life and childhood was gone and lost forever. Ever since when I hear Abbey Road those memories come back to me and put me at ease and I feel exactly like I felt then.
