Memory: Globe Theatre, Stockton-on-Tees

22nd November 1963 I was one of a group of school friends from Darlington High School for girls who organised a coach to travel to the Globe Cinema in Stockton on Tees to see the Beatles live on stage. The theatre would only allow 4 ticket sales per person so we had to send the appropriate number of people to purchase the number of tickets needed to fill a coach. We drew straws to decide which of us had to go to Stockton and queue all night to get the tickets. This group had to miss a day from school and the rest of us forged 'notes' from their parents explaining their 'absence'. Unfortunately those queuing were interviewed by a local tv news reporter and appeared on the six o 'clock news. We were found out. We suffered some sort of penalty, probably detention for a number of weeks, but it was well worth it and I do believe that our headmistress had a secret admiration for our organisational skills in pulling this off. The evening was magnificent and we left the theatre on a high. However, we arrived home to discover that the US President John F Kennedy had been assassinated in Dallas, Texas. My Beatles memory has forever been tied to this tragic event. Whenever there were memorial programmes or consiracy theory documentaries about the death of JFK I also thought back to how excited we all were after seeing the Beatles and how sad we felt that JFK was gone.
