About memory

There are several distinct types of memory, including short-term and long-term memory. One important type of long-term memory is autobiographical memory - memory of the events and experiences from our own lives.

Autobiographical memory determines who we are and what we are. It provides a context for our sense of self. What we remember about our experiences, our friends, our family, the public events of our lifetimes - events that we ourselves have lived through - defines our identity and our personality.

Shared memories bind people together, giving us something to talk to each other about and share our emotions. Although the event is a shared experience, each individual has his or her own, unique perspective on it.

The emotional nature of these memories is important: memories lead us to have emotions about the past and to experience the past in ways that are meaningful for us as individuals but also collectively as members of groups such as families, work and sports teams, audiences and fan clubs.

In the Magical Memory Tour we are particularly interested in how experiences from our lives might be associated with music, personality, and the public perception of the Beatles. The Fab Four provide us with a cultural reference that draws whole groups of diverse people together.

From a psychological point of view, the information you provide here will help us gain a better appreciation of the role of the Beatles in our lives.
